ALS inquiring about course to be pursued by urban Friends concerning conscientious rights and likely reactions of civil authorities. The letter also reflects the growing tension between some rural and urban Quakers. Bettle, Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, had an evangelical orientation, and Kersey was a reformer who later sided with the Hicksites.

Jesse Kersey of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, was a prominent minister in the Society of Friends. The son of William and Hannah Kersey, he married Elizabeth Coates and had eleven children.
